The first version of the sun reflector.

The SunTrack system can reflect the sun in my house and keep the reflection all day. That way it is possible to have a lot of light in my living room witch is facing east. This system is called a heliostat. Here is a site where you can calculate the position of the sun. The position of the sun is different every day, the software contains a formula to calculate. The sun position depends of the time and date and your place on earth. The time is very important, the DCF clock is used.

System properties:

The system was build with the following parameters:
  • Stand-alone, no pc needed.
  • Uses robust and cheap motors originally for dishes
  • Installation without pc
  • Little energy consumption.
  • Can be used to keep a reflection position (Heliostat) or face the sun.
  • Protection with end switch and motor check
  • Operate with HF remote control.
  • LCD screen on controller.
  • Bluetooth port for PDA
The software is written in C and has 17 sub programs:
  • DCF decoder.
  • Remote control decoding
  • Calculation of the position of the sun.
  • Reflection formula.
  • Motor azimuth and elevation control
  • Guard on hal sensors (motors)
  • Guard on end switches
System manual to install the system: 
  • bring mirror to position Zero-X and zero-Y with remote control
  • learn maximum: bring mirror to max x and y.
  • learn hardware offset: Point the mirror to the sun by placing a piece of paper with a plastic cup on it and see the shadow.
  • Save the follow position
  • Bring the mirror to a desired parking position, and save park
  • Check the system by follow (the sun) mode
  • Point the sun beam to desired position and save as target 1,2 or 3 with remote control.

Suntrack controller

A DCF77 (german short wave time transmitter) receiver sets the time to a timer chip, the pic processor 18F2520 calculates the position of the sun. The reflection postition (3 postions possible) is calculated and the mirrors are adjusted every few seconds.

Suntrack 2.0

The first SunTrack system worked realy good. But the math took too much space so I had to use 2 processors. Time for a new pcb. Version 2.0 with cat-5 connectors and PIC16F6722.
  • Now 100% operation time, the sun is reflected all day every day when in limits of the hardware.
  • 3 target positions to save and recall by remote control.
  • Follow every target, when the target position is moved manually with the remote control that becomes the new target position.
  • Parameter save: all parameters are stored in rom, so the controller continues working after power down.
  • DCF synchronization at night or when off.
